Winter is coming!
Winter Expansion Announcement
CCP revealed some of the features of the winter expansion today via Twitch.tv. The expansion name is Rubicon, in real life it’s the name of a river in Italy, and refers to an idiom “Crossing the Rubicon” which means:
to pass a point of no return, and refers to Julius Caesar’s army’s crossing of the river in 49 BC, which was considered an act of insurrection.
CCP’s senior producer – CCP Seagull has a very ambitious plan for the upcoming 3 years of EVE development and said that Rubicon is simply the beginning – a first step in that journey, which I am very much looking forward to.
In the universe of EVE Online, military and industrial might re-emerged following the dark ages of the EVE Gate collapse, growing into four human civilizations that rose to the stars: the Amarr Empire, the Gallente Federation, the Caldari State and the Minmatar Republic. Yet the capsuleers, the immortal pilots of EVE’s most powerful spaceships, are becoming a stronger and stronger force of their own. They will not settle with what has been served to them thus far. EVE Online: Rubicon is the first step beyond a point of no return, on a dangerous path to ascension with consequences that neither capsuleers nor players can predict.
Think about building things and about destroying them.
Think about the rise of the immortal capsuleer, taking over what the human Empires used to control
Imagine capsuleer corporations, rising in power and capabilities, flying their own colors and using their might to build up whole areas of space. Imagine disrupting what someone else built up, through cunning or force. Imagine profiting from the interstellar-scale industry generated as capsuleers take control of new powerful technologies.
Imagine what could happen if capsuleers truly mastered the science of space travel itself, and were no longer bound to the known universe.
But enough about that, let’s see what the winter brings us this year. First of all
Guerilla-style Warfare Support
or so they call it. We will be given four new deployable, player-owned structures.
- “Siphon Unit” – a small structure that when anchored at a hostile POS will slowly steal away things like reaction products, moon-goo and related things. It will not be automatically targeted by POS guns, so one would have to manually man the guns and shoot it if you want to get rid of this Leech. They also can be accessed by anyone, which means anyone on grid will be able to pick up the things that the Leech stole. Sounds interesting enough.
- Depot – This one is probably my favorite. It’s a mobile base, so to speak. It will be able to store modules, it may have the ability to set an reinforcement timer in case it was attacked, and it will provide a fitting service for you. No POS Shield and it’s yet unconfirmed if it would consume fuel. But given that it’s meant to be mobile and small it pr
- Deployable tractor beam and looter. Basically an automatic box you can deploy on grid with you, while you run anomalies, missions and what have you. It will drag all the wrecks (your wrecks) close and loot them.
- Deployable micro cyno jammer – this, I suspect, will be very popular in nullsec. It will have a small range (up to 100km?) cyno jamming ability, however it will not prevent Covert Cyno’s to be lit.
Warp Speed Mechanics Change
CCP finally fixed the issue of acceleration and de-acceleration during warping. The warp speed of your ship will now affect how fast your ship accelerates and slows down. This means that small, fast warping ships will warp even faster, because they will accelerate to max warp speed faster, while slow warping ships will accelerate slower.
In addition to that they added Warp Disruption Field Nullification to all Interceptors. Yes, inties are not affected by bubbles anymore. This is going to be very interesting. Bubbles themselves will get an art rework too.
New SOE Pirate Faction Ships!
I know I skipped a few changes mentioned in the announcement but this one got me the most excited and I want to write about it. New Ships! Sisters of EVE Faction Frigate and Cruiser (so far). They will be a mix of amarr and gallente, which means armor bonuses and drone bonuses. They will also have the ability to warp cloaked (CovOps ships!) and have additional bonuses for exploration, like hacking and I assume scanning.
They look amazing, they sound amazing, I will be getting LOTS of them!
This is what the Frigate looks like:
And this is the Cruiser
I am really looking forward to flying one of these, they look amazing, the art department did an excellent job designing these two and I do hope more is comming (BC, BS?).
The above is what got my attention during the presentation but there was more. Interdictors are getting a rebalance, and so do Electronic Attack Frigates (Yey, Sentinel!).
The certificate system is getting a total overhaul, making it easier to follow and understand.
Character selection screen is also getting a facelift, but there wasn’t much info on that, I do hope they incorporate character switching without the need to re-log to your account.
Twitch.tv will be integrated into the EVE client, so you can stream easier and without the need to use 3rd party software.
They are also adding Rapid Heavy Missile Launchers, technically an anti-cruiser weapon for Battleships, which uses heavy missiles for ammo and have lower dps then cruise missiles.
And then there’s of course the Maruder rebalance but we already know about that.
Overall it was nice to see what’s in the works for winter. It was not mind-blowing and I didn’t pee my pants, but it will surely be an interesting expansion, I feel, on par with Crucible or Retribution. I am looking forward to testing it on SISI in a couple of weeks!
