Rubicon hits Singularity Test Server
CCP Released some early designs for various features that we will see in Rubicon expansion on Singularity Test Server this week. And while there are still many things missing, or haven’t reached the final stage mechanical wise it is exciting to see how the winter expansion will influence the landscape of EVE in November.
I decided to log in on Singularity and record at least some of the changes that are coming, focusing mainly on changes to art assets, new ship models, and doing a little bit of testing on the Bastion module and new warp mechanics.
CCP deployed Rubicon on Singularity way earlier then usual. This is intentional, they want to get as much feedback as possible and have as much time to listen to it and act accordingly as possible. Most of the things I report on in this post are subject to change, so keep that in mind. Nothing is final. Yet.
First of all, let’s take a look at the new Bastion module for Maruder class battleships. CCP announced that work is being done in order to rebalance maruders, giving them a bit more power and making them more useful. While various attributes and mechanics are still being worked upon, the first version or draft of the Bastion animation for Kronos and Golem are already deployed on SISI. Paladin and Vargur animations are still to come (in the next SISI patch).
It is a bit underwhelming at this time, given all the hype around the word Transformation CCP devs have used to describe it before the release on the test server, but it can still change.
At the moment the Bastion module acts as a second Damage Control, adding 30% resists all across the board, meaning you can reach +70% resists in hull for example. It also increases your optimal and falloff range and gives a 100% bonus to local repping power.
The reuse or activation delay bonus for Micro Jump Drives is very nice, meaning you can coast in and out of Bastion (which lasts 60 seconds) and then jump away. New kiting mechanics if you ask me. I already got myself a Paladin on TQ and I am really looking forward to testing Bastion in real PVP. FOR SCIENCE!
(Not So) New Command Ship Models
I don’t really know the history behind this chance, but I have read somewhere that it was requested by the community. In any case, CCP is changing the way our beloved field (combat) command ships look. Nighthawk, Absolution, Sliepnir and Eos are getting changed and will no longer be developed from Ferox, Prophecy, Cyclone and Brutix hulls. Instead they are given ship models of the (old) tier 2 Battlecruisers, meaning Drake, Harbinger, Hurricane and Myrmidon. See the video below:
I personally don’t like the change because I’m used to the current Absolution model and I love it. I kinda see the change makes sense – both tier 1 and tier 2 T1 Battlecruisers now have a T2 counterpart, but still. It’s kinda weird.
New Interdiction Sphere Effect (BUBBLES!)
With Rubicon comes many art asset changes, one of which will be redesigning the way bubbles look! And it is not only a cosmetic change, but it was also improved when it comes to performance. At least that has been my experience so far. I get far less lag when inside of a bubble then I used to have, which is a very nice thing when running EVE on a 4 year old PC. This is how they will look:
I love the new look, they do not wobble anymore, they look less like a force field and more like an actual, well, bubble. And it’s been long overdue for this change. I, for one, welcome our new BUBBLE OVERLORDS! YEAH!
Interbus Ship Identification System
Or simply put, a ship progression tree. A new feature that will let you see how each race and faction ship progression works. This feature is still deep in beta stages so when you play around it on SISI you will see many descriptions missing and buttons not working, but it’s very nice so far. At least for new players. I’d imagine the era of explaining what one should train after they mastered the art of flying a Punisher class frigate is over. This is what it looks like right now:
The feature also cause some debate because it features a ship that CCP has not mentioned yet in any release or rebalance notes and as much as I’d love to speculate and dream, I will leave this be for now, at least untill CCP actually tells us something more about it.
SOE Faction Ship Models
While not on the market on SISI yet, the new SOE Ship models have been implemented on SISI and you can view them in the show info window. They haven’t been skinned (painted) yet, and you can’t fly them yet, but for what it’s worth here’s a sneak peak at what they might look like in game:
I love them and I want them to have my babies. That is all.
Warp Speed Mechanics Changes
This is probably the biggest and most debated change coming in the Winter Expansion. I am yet to form an opinion on it, other then I think it will have the biggest impact on PvP since the introduction of T3 Cruisers. This change along with the Interdiction Nullification added to interceptors will shake up the landscape quite a bit I’d imagine. I have done some testing with a Crusader on SISI and it looks great so far:
One thing I love about it (aside from the SPEED) is the coming-out-of-warp animation. It reminds me of every single SCIFI movie I have ever seen that featured FTL traveling. Very cool!
Rapid Heavy Missile Launchers
Last but not least, the RHML’s, a Battleship missile module that uses heavy missiles and is designed as an anti-cruiser and battlecruiser weapon type. It’s interesting, and I can’t wait to see them in action (RHML ECM Scorpions anyone?). Someone on Reddit has put together these nice graphs representing the new launcher damage projection in comparison to the existing missile launchers.
I’ve done some testing on SISI. I fitted a Golem with the new launchers and went to kill rats. The rate of fire is close to Heavy Assault Missiles, and damage is comparable. The range is similar to what a HM Drake can reach.
That is all for now, I will continue to watch SISI for changes and try to record any new features and things CCP adds as they are being deployed there. So far it promises to be a cool expansion and I can’t wait to get my hands on it when it hits TQ.
