Wormhole Fundamentals, Gas Harvesting (Ep. 12)
Gas sites in wormhole space are home to unique gases that cannot be found in known space. These gases are a component of T3 manufacturing. Gases for the manufacturing of booster drugs are not available in wormhole space. Gas clouds in wormhole space do not deal damage, but all gas sites are guarded by a number of Sleepers. In order for the Sleepers to spawn, the Gas site must be scanned to 100% and warp initiated to the site. You can cancel warp and continue scanning at that point. The Sleepers will spawn about twenty minutes after warp is first initiated to the site.
Gas harvesting is not skill intensive. All you need is the gas harvesting skill and a ship that can mount turrets. The skill is 1x, so it is well worth training to V. The Venture is the preferred harvesting ship with its large ore bay and agility. At Mining Frigate V it also gains an additional yield bonus over other ships mounting the maximum of 5 Gas Harvesters.
There are nine types of Gas sites in wormhole space. There are nine types of gas that can be found in these sites. Each gas site contains two gas clouds, one large and one small. Each type of gas can only be found in two types of Gas sites. One of those types will have a large cloud of the gas, and the other type will have a small cloud of the gas. The worth of the gases vary, giving some sites better bang for buck than others. Higher quality gas sites spawn in higher class wormholes, though any of the lower level sites may spawn as well. A C1 will only spawn low quality Perimeter sites, while a C6 may spawn any type of gas site: Perimeter, Frontier or Core.
Starting with the most valuable, the Instrumental and Vital Core Reservoirs are found only in C5 and C6 space and contain the bulkiest and most profitable gases: C320 and C540. Due to the large volume of these gases, a larger fleet of miners supported by mining links is best for maximum time efficiency. Tech 2 gas harvesters will make a huge difference here. Both sites are defended by a set of four battleships, and the Vital contains an additional four remote repping frigates. These battleships neut, web, and point. Logistics of some kind may be required to safely clear the site.
The rest of the sites can be cleared of Sleepers by one or two people in Battlecruisers. These sites are all guarded by a handful of frigates, cruisers, or sentry guns. They will web and neut you, but they are quite weak. The gases found in these sites are not worth much on their own, though some of them are components in very profitable gas reactions. The more impressive sounding the site, the better quality of gas that you will find. Due to the small volume of individual units of these gases, they can be easily mined out by one or two people.
Once you have mined the gas, you can either react it into fullerides yourself or sell it directly on the market. The fulleride reaction only requires the relevant POS modules, two wormhole space gases, and a small amount of minerals. Many people choose to react the gases for maximum portability and profitability.
As there is no local in wormhole space, you must be vigilant while harvesting gas. Bring along scouts or friendly combat ships to guard you and keep a weather eye on directional scan. A little bit of caution makes the difference between profit and podding.
